Are you looking for fresh organic fruits in Sri Lanka? Here’s Live Life.

Do you think eating organic is better for us? Recent research studies are backing up what many thought: organic fruits do indeed have a healthier nutritional profile than their conventional counterparts.  Fruits are also lower in pesticide residues.  This three-part series shares some of the science behind the nutritional benefits of fruits. This third installment covers the nutritional benefits of organic foods, fruits, and vegetables.

The Nutritional Benefits of Organic Fruits

Do you know?

  • Eating organic foods, fruits and vegetables could increase your antioxidant intake by 20-40%.
  • Organic fruit – strawberries have more nutrients and antioxidants than their conventional counterparts.
  • Organic fruit – tomatoes are 50% higher in vitamin C content than conventional tomatoes.

Antioxidants pack a bigger punch in organic food -fruit and vegetables.

A new research study out of the United Kingdom found that organic crops have significantly higher antioxidant levels when compared to conventional crops. The international research team looked at antioxidant activity and found a 17% mean percentage difference between organic products and conventional crops.

When assessing individual antioxidants in organic food and conventional crops, the organic ones had 19% higher levels of phenolic acids, 69% higher levels of flavanones, 28% higher levels of stilbenes, 26% higher levels of flavones, 50% higher levels of flavonols, and 51% higher levels of anthocyanins.

That’s a lot of numbers but it all adds up to good news for organic food lovers. Do you eat those recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily? If so, eating fresh organic foods rather than conventional is like getting two extra servings worth of antioxidants.

  • Organic Passion FruitOrganic Passion Fruit

    Organic Passion Fruit 1Kg

    Rs.1,400.00

    Nutrients

A single purple passion fruit contains:

    • Calories: 17
    • Fiber: 2 grams
    • Vitamin C: 9% of the Daily Value (DV)
    • Vitamin A: 8% of the DV
    • Iron: 2% of the DV
    • Potassium: 2% of the DV

Though this may not seem like much, keep in mind that these are the values for a single, small fruit that has only 17 calories. Calorie for calorie, it’s a good source of fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin A.

It’s also rich in beneficial plant compounds, including carotenoids and polyphenols.

In fact, one study found that passion fruit was richer in polyphenols than many other tropical fruits, including banana, lychee, mango, papaya, and pineapple.

Additionally, passion fruit offers a small amount of iron.

Your body doesn’t usually absorb iron from plants very well. However, the iron in passion fruit comes with a lot of vitamin C, which is known to enhance iron absorption.
